This sculpture is the extreme end of the continuum that explores water from its fluid state to its solid state. The form of the sculpture is a 3d model of actual waves in a pool frozen in position. In other words, it is a solid photograph. The 3d CAD model file was kindly provided by Nigel Morris from his Master's thesis, Image-based Water Surface Reconstruction with Refractive Stereo.
The surface of a pond is rich in texture, in waves, in ripples. But the texture is fleeting, always changing. It is impossible to feel the texture of water because the act of touching itself changes the texture. This sculpture makes feeling the texture of water possible for the first time.
This sculpture also captures the same reflections as liquid water does, causing it to look dramatically different depending on the surrounding lighting and environment.
